While Hearst Castle might still have a few zebras running around and the Hemingway Home has the polydactyl cats the author loved so much still greeting guests – we here are unfortunate, or fortunate (depending on how you look at it), enough not to have any living legacies of Whittell’s exotic pets on the grounds of Thunderbird Lodge. That does not mean that we do not have a lot of critters on the property! We have squirrels (lots of them), lizards, deer, bear, coyotes, and even a bobcat calling Thunderbird Lodge home these days.

These two lizards live behind this sign near the Caretaker’s cottage. You can see them almost every morning sunning themselves.
