Florence Irene Whittell
B. April 1883 D. 1960
Florence was George Jr.’s cousin. Her father was Dr. A.P. Whittell, who was a successful doctor and occultist in Sacramento after graduating from University of California in 1873. Sadly, Dr. A.P. Whittell died in 1895 when Florence was only 12 while he was visiting Lake Tahoe. George Sr. and Anna Whittell took both Florence and her school teacher mother, Jennie, in. Florence lived the ultimate socialite life with her aunt and uncle. She and Anna went to all the big San Francisco parties and Anna hosted Florence’s debutante ball. George Jr. is often noted as her escort to the opera or balls in the social pages of the San Francisco Call. She would have been very much like a sister to him. Florence was an avid golfer as seen here as well as an accomplished driver – but unlike George Jr., of horses not cars. Though in another article about her, it is noted was a great automobilist as well. Florence went on to marry a German businessman in Paris in 1909 where they resided for many years.
